when the ends start getting tattered they are getting too far along. get them about cabbage head or a tad bigger size and they are the best. I mean the hens.

Are their other factors to look for besides just growing at the base of an oak? Are they more likely to grow on a specific type of oak. Near creeks or on ridges...field edges etc.. Are their other conditions that increase the likelyhood fo their growth?

I`ve found them in folks front yards, pastures, fence row and deep woods. always a white or burr oak for me, but others find them on red and black oaks. the only common thing is the tree has to be old and in decline. probably hollow and dieing. I don`t mean like die this year, but has been mature for 50 years and probably going tip over sometime in the next 50. a buddy says he finds them on stumps aftere the tree is cut or blown over and no longer leafing out for at least another 20 years

Adam, call me and come over and I'll show you one at my house and tell you what to look for. The one at my house has doubled in size in the last 5 days and still looks good so I may not pick it for another 5 but if it looks like it stops I'll cut it. 95% give or take are black oak that I find them and they are mostly in fence lines, log or county roads and usually real large trees. Like lakota said, there is always damage to the trees. Definately now is the time to be looking as it may not last much longer. If we get a hard freeze, I think it will really put a hurtin' on them.

they must be pretty tough as far as freeze as we`ve been 28 degrees several times and it didn`t do anything to them at all that I could see. we are getting about done here, so I imagine it will be over everywhere in a week or aso. imo they are best a tad before maturity, meaning maximum size. when a guy finds them you are flooded with them anyway, maybe 100 lbs or more, so no need risk they start going bad . I watch the handy ones and once they quit expanding, it`s time.

I check on a few trees today and was surprised that they hadn't started yet. I did fine one about the size of a lemon so I'll check again in another week.
