looks like they still want them, just don`t want to pay the highs of the last year or two. I`d guess the drop in price will correct the harvest levels too. unless in extremely thick grey country, they have to treated as incidentals at $27 we see cats drop too and most everyone will wrap it up. no live mkt, no coyote mkt, no grey or anything else mkt and if cats go too, well , say-0-nara to the longliner or full timer. can`t float a boat in a dust hole.

I dont think the cat market is gone just yet from the looks of things. At $749 AVERAGE for westerns is great! I wouldnt mind selling greys at $25 average all day out here. They will pay the fuel. Even the coon aint bad.......aint good, but they aint bad either. What else are we going to do on Nov 15th? Deer hunt? Not me. Cats aint ready yet as far as I am concerned at this time. I for darn sure would rather skin a $20 coon than a $25 coyote. Granted the coyote is more fun to catch. But there is some fun in nailing a coon in a 160 or a 220. I even enjoyed catching the last 2 muskrats in Fountain Co last year! hehe

Gibb, In the May sale how many Western Bobcats were offered and sold against how many Eastern Bobcats?
Do the Western Bobcats include the semi heavy type of bobcats like found in Nebraska and Kansas?
Can you describe (I know it is difficult) the differance between an eastern and western type bobcat?

Gibb, Can you bring some bobcat pelts to the FTA Convention and show us how you guys grade these pelts?

About 800 were westerns out of about 2000 total. The Kansas Nebraska type would more then likely end up as centrals. The biggest difference between cats is the color. Off course you can go 50 miles and it can make a huge different in the color. Western cats have better color. Again you have coastal cats that our as orange colored as they come Oregon/Was. Generally the best cats come from higher elevations. Most desert type cats are very flat. The most important thing on a cat is the belly.

Robert, all our cats are at the shop here in Canada and very difficult to ship down to the US because of the cities treaty. I will speak to our rep who is going but I doubt that we have any to show. Cheers Jim

gibb, I understand central. so what did centrals do this last sale? ks /nebraska types. seems both states are 450 miles wide and so lets just say central ks at the nebraska line. mine should be better as they are west of there. do you have any accounts at all from those areas that sent cats in? I hate to be the guinia pig.

OK, now I am confused.
You report Eastern and Westerns with no "centrals" reported. Are the "Centrals" your "Eastern" bobcats?

Gibb, I would certainly make a space available and extend every courtesy to you or "Rep" if you wanted an area to conduct fur handling demos at the FTA convention.

Thanks Robert, but we will just be manning our booth. Mark Finnigan will be at the convention with Alexis Rose our Indiana rep. Mark is our marten grader and is also an expert grader for raccoon. You can have a chat with him about the cats. Mark has been in the fur buisness for more then 30 years, he started with the hudson bay company in Montreal when they used to sell wild fur. I will be in Grande Parire Alberta at the Alberta trappers Convention.
Doc, ask Mark where your cats would fit in.
Robert, we generally only used to brake down our beaver prices right down too size and grade. Our averages were all in without much breakdown. It is only the last few years that we have started to break the sales report down via sections and grades. Who knows maybe one day we will have it all on line. Cheers Jim
