Mifur exhibition off to a better start than expected
05.03.2009
The atmosphere at the Mifur exhibition that opened on Wednesday is positive but cautious.
- Most customers said that the exhibition got off to a better start than expected. Orders have been placed already during the first day and our customers are optimistic, reports Finnish Fur Sales’ Managing Director Pirkko Rantanen-Kervinen directly from the exhibition.
The spirit of the present times can be seen in the collections. Imaginative works of art that are impossible to use have been set aside this year. Elegance, trendiness and easy saleability are the theme of the exhibition.
Fashion houses continue to use fur. They are able to process fur in various ways and also combine it with textiles open-mindedly. The most popular product of the season is a waistcoat usually made of long-haired fox. Fox is also the most popular material in trimmings. A wide variety of Saga techniques have been utilized in fur waistcoats and lightweight jackets.
The results of fur dressing companies’ product development can also be seen on the catwalks. Beautiful soft colours and interesting dyeing techniques, such as gradient dyeing, are used in the garments. For example, the colour white is not hard white but beautiful shining pearl white.
The most innovative young fur designer of the year 2009 will be selected in the Remix competition. Siidaa Aberra, representing Finland and Fur Finland, has made it to the finals, which means he is among the four best–this is what we know already.
Fairly positive atmosphere at the Hong Kong fair
27.02.2009
The exhibitors at the Hong Kong International Fur & Fashion Fair gave a sigh of relief as their preparation for the worst proved to be unnecessary. The first three days of the fair exceeded early conservative expectations.
- Although the sales figures and the number of visitors showed a slight decrease, compared with a year ago, the atmosphere at the fair was better than expected. Many exhibitors had prepared for a sharp decline, and for them the fair was a positive surprise, says Pirkko Rantanen-Kervinen, Finnish Fur Sales’ Managing Director.
Trendy garments sold better than basic products at this fair as well.
Far and away the most important items at the Hong Kong fair are mink garments, but this time mink was spiced up with fox trimmings. Silver fox and mutation fox skins were popular in jackets and waistcoats and a delightful number of Saga techniques had been used in the making of the products.
Because of a decrease in raw material prices, USD prices of ready-to-wear garments declined by a fifth from a year ago.
Orders for sample collections were placed eagerly. However, manufacturers are waiting for the prices to develop during the next round of auctions and did not yet place any large orders.
Russian customers were still the most important customer group at the fair. Despite the low prices of ready-to-wear garments, the Russians, burdened by the weak rouble, were cautious in their purchases. A positive surprise at the fair was the active role played by Korean and Japanese fashion shops. Trimmings suitable for fashion boutiques and small, lightweight products changed hands briskly.
