I offset the trap for a right front foot catch (and it works about 50% of the time) -- 48% left foot -- 2% hind foot. Anyway, assuming I'm setting the trap for a west wind and I expect the coyote to come from the east, I have the dog due west of the pan. That puts it at about 11 oclock to the hole. And actually, I bet as long as you have the trap set right side up, any position will work equally well.

I start at 12:00 twist it in to seat may end up at one or two but I am just getting started sounds like I may need to try for 2 to 3. Possums and pole cats don't seem to care eather way

On some/most of my traps I don't have dog's......but I usually set the trap right up close to the hole with the trap in front of it...seems to do fine.
