And found several that were too far gone, so I have some trees to look at next year. It may be coincidence, but it seems like the red oaks had the early ones and the white oaks had the later ones.

I picked 6 over the weekend. All were in good shape and I left another little one to grow. Some of my best spots haven't hit yet.

Jeff, I'm no expert by no means on the hens. I just walk my rear off lookin' for'em and keep a mental note on where and when I find'em. On the how cold.....I think, IMO that when the ground freezes, they are done. I've checked trees all the way into the end of the first week in November and came back a couple weeks later checking traps and found big ones that were too far gone. But....it was a warm wet fall. I've got pics of hens I found in gun season so don't give up if the conditions are right. I've vacuum packed a load of them so I hope that works. If you just froze them and bagged'em, I'd be checking them every now and then because I tried that and they didn't keep very long.

Dave, that little one I left to grow some is on a tripple red oak. I have checked that tree every week since the end of Sept. and it's just now producing. Last year that tree had a ring of seven but I didn't find it until gun season and I think I was a week too late.

Got a bag out of the freezer that we vac packed and had for Christmas breakfast. They were just like "new". Have to see what they are like later on but I bet they will be good for a good while.

I let them thaw a bit and stripped into smaller pieces and saute' them with salt, pepper, olive oil and a little butter. Threw some green onion in right at the end and tossed.
