not hen of the woods. I mean the yellow/red sulfur one that tastes like chicken breast. found a bunch of nice soft fresh ones this morning. usually by the time I find them they are over age and hard. can`t tell it from chicken breast when fried . anyway, now is the time in central indiana. they must be drought resistant!

Yep, they grow mostly year round except when freezin' cold. In dry spells, they can still grow out of moist logs and standing dead trees. Be looking for the Chanterelles. Right now is the start of their season but they will need some moisture in the ground to really do something. They grow out of the ground and not on wood or roots and not in clusters like (Jackolanterns) which are poison. Jackolanterns have gills and chants don't.

iN WET YEARS, i FIND A LOT OF CHANTS, In dry years hardly any.
Most chickens I have found have been in late summer or early fall, but I guess I am out in the woods more then. I will keep my eyes open.

these are about the prettiest mushroom. brilliant yellow and orange and look like giant flower. I`m going to go pick the rest today before they get hard and tough. normally due to heat and chiggars and bugs I don`t go in the woods this time of the year. these I just happened to see from the lane while cruising some timber. mark w. is the one that showed me wat they were or I`d just think some old fungus. one thing about this drought, no skeeters this year, and not many deer flys either. all the seedlings dieing again, trees losing leaves. so far we have had had less rain than the drought of `88. didn`t think I`d see another 1,000 year drought so soon. suppose to avg another 976 years before the next 1,000 year one.

Dave, I hit one of my "honey holes" this morning. A place where I usually fill 4 walmart bags of Chants plus some Oysters and Honeys in maybe 3 hrs. Didn't fill a sandwich bag today....just not enough moisture. It's going to have to rain before I go back.
