Hello Now, to all those who participate in the live market.... how does it work? I mean, I understand the whole jist, but what does it all entail for the care of animal and all the way to "how the heck do you sell 200 coyotes in a year?!" I just want to get a head start in this business and I have plenty of time on my hands so I can put my time into the animal. I just need to know what to do.

First you do some research and get the permits and licenses. Then you shop for equipment to catch, treat, and house the animals. Catching tends toward large cable snares and soft catch footholds. Treating means shot for any injuries they may have from the trap or their other travels, as well as for other diseases you don't want to export. Housing means a cage that conforms to your states regulations and the needs of the animals. Don't forget the food and water dishes as well as an allowance for waste removal. Then comes marketing the critters. Your sales have to conform to your state laws and the buyers laws should also be clear. Cross all "Ts" and dot all "Is". The market is for healthy animals to replace the animals that escape from or just die for some reason in the runnung pens. Hope that helps.

My first priority are the laws and rules. I didn't think about shots. But how well does this market do when the animals fur is becoming in its prime. Will the price increase double then the standard price? Thanks by the way for the info.

Obviously fur has nothing to do with running for live market. Matter of fact during fur season you will see prices drop on the live market because some half witted fur trapper wants to make the big bucks and don't know what is going on. That fur trapper then sells a coyote with a bum foot. Pen buyers know with trappers care for the coyotes and all newbies get treated pretty rough until they build a repore with the buyer. IF you do it right and the buer is comfortable with you you will not see thisdrop in price during the fur season. (the buyer knows were his bread is buttered during the "off season".

Ah, I see. Well, I do not want that now do I?... No I don't. Well, I dunno how many running pens are in my area and I have no idea how many people do the live market. I think none. I'm assuming though they'll buy more than one coyote, right? And also let's say I caught a few coyotes, how long should I keep them before I put them on the market? A month?

First off the best advise I can give you is to buy Bob's dog line video. It goes over quite a bit. Second you might want to check and see if live market is even legal in your state, in some it's not. Next, you are on the right track with wanting to sell more then one at a time. I don't sell a whole buch at once. I'm not big into it as most. I sell enough a year to make it worth while. (wife don't like me messing with it since I got bit good) I had a buyer that would come and pick up one at a time but he really liked it if I could wait until I had at least 3 to make it worth his while. Some buyers want at least 10. Remember when selling that you have a reputation to uphold if you sell one with a bum foot the buyer will remember that and might not buy from you or offer you a severly discounted rate. Also one thing you have to check is if the buyer is legal. Some will tell you it don't matter but I think it got some people in trouble. If he is taking across state lines it might not be on the up and up.

So, does Bob have a site where I can buy the video? Also when you say "bum foot" you mean a coyote that doesn't run that good, right? Should I not sell a coyote (or even take it in) if it's limping or has sores on it's paw's or somthing? By the way, I did fine a running pen right outside of my town! Didn't see that coming!

I'll keep you posted on when I want to buy the videos. But these videos will give me the instructions on what size I should build the pen, what food the animal needs (I'm hoping dog food will cover that), what kind of shots, ect, right?

ya, all that. but you might want to ck the status of live market in your state before you spend a dime, and appraise your selling opportunities too. things are getting shaky at best and gone at worst. the fox dvd covers plenty more than live stuff however, so still be worth your money.

Knox your getting advised from one of the best in the biz. I don't have the fox video yet (I will soon) but I know for a fact Bob will not steer you wrong. Get the fox one first. Like he also said make sure everything is on the up and up BEFORE your start live trapping. Like Tony said too you'll know a bum foot when you see it. A little cut or limp is not bad just let them heal before you sell.

I can believe it. From Bob's posts, he seems to be the expert of experts of the live sales. Now... for some reason I cannot find anything on live sales, but I think it's legal for two trappers nearby sell their coyotes to this running pen down the road. But to make sure I'll call up my DNR officer. But what kind of license do you guys need to do the sale?
