dave, don`t scrub it so good, serious. looks like a whole berry pod fell down that bank some years ago. I used to dig a good bity on clifty, but most of it was small stunted root due to the poor yellow clay soils.

Those arent my roots, Bob. I just posted the pics for hoosieryote. He will get on here and tell us about it, but it sure looks like some steep hillsides. I have looked in a couple woods along Clifty, but never had much luck. A lot of stunted roots around here. All the good soil has had the trees bulldozed off long ago.

It was steep sometimes holding on with knees and elbows and one hand while digging with the other. I slid 30 feet down the hill on my butt at one time. But it was well worth it knowing i was digging old seng that nobody else had the gumption to crawl out that cliff. I kept most of the berries because in a couple of years i wont be able to go out that cliff. lol Will be going again in the morning to get the rest of the hill done. So did i clean it to much bob or not enough?

to omuch. never use a brush. just rinse around by hand or squirt with a hose. especially big or smooth root. if it is scrubbed snow white you wash the good right off it and it may be docked back to woods grown or tame. don can come on and adsvise too. ok don, lets hear it.

Some of the root looks ok some looks a bit on the white side. All you must do is take a garden hose with a good nozzel on it and put it in a bucket and spray it good enough to get the clods and what have you off of the root. Never brush seng. Also you don't want your seng to be so dirty that it is gray colored when dried. Seng should dry to be a kinda golden brownish color with the dirt showing in the rings on the seng. I see dirt in the rings on your better pieces of seng. Hard to tell on a puter just how well or how much is to much. I do know that if your in real dry soil or sandy soil that seng can wash clean real easy. Once agai, you must wash it some to get the root where it does not dry gray , Buyers do not want dirty root, just as they don'r want it to white.

Not to be a hard but. I was thinkin there was a state owned place by the name of clifty falls. If you dig on state property be sure and check to find out if you can dig seng on that property. I personally don't give a big rats rear, but for your own safety, be sure your allowed to dig the area your digging, especially if it is state owned. Good luck and I hope you dig a ton of the stuff.

If private ground be sure you have permission from the owner,if not it is theft.I just had a guy digging some of mine and have been told it is 1000$ fine and 180 days in jail. Not being hard on you as you know it happened to me and i want ever one to know that they need to ask before digging. I will say that all in all catching a man is about like trapping, you get a real bang when you get him.

I`ve planted a good bit over the last 35 years in private woodlots with land owner consent. most has been stolen, and no one ever got permission to dig. but at least i did my part. I know you guys do too. but there are many who don`t, for everyone of us. that`s disgusting. and they aren`t antis, they are other trappers, same guys who steal your traps. grrrr.

For a logger and cattleman thats in the woods 24/7- Hoosieryote picked an odd time to start wearing camo? If he was a real man like Wendt he'd just dig by flashlight! LOL! Speaking of the digging by flashlight story... anybody remember that night at the Greencastle ISTA convention? One quote- "ITS A FOX, ITS A FOX"
