Look at the lower part of the hens. I usually see them in the base where I cut them off. I usually leave around 6 inches of the shroom, If you pay close attention, you will see little brown lines going through the base but not usually in the leaves of the hens.

Don, I have only seen the "maggots" little white worms on Hens that were past prime. The under side of the frons are porous and rust stain in color on the stems and stalks. I've never seen them in fresh ones when everything is tight and smooth with bright white undersides and tan to charcoal colored tops depending on sunlight exposure. Also, I have always cut them off close to the ground and have not seen any negative effects from year to year so IMO, you don't need to leave 6". I pulled the first ones I ever found and never found 1 on those two trees since so IMO, that's the wrong thing to do.
